This painting includes conflicting meanings for fire learnt from two different cultures.

Fire is not seen just as a destructive force in Aboriginal culture but rather as a powerful rejuvenating force for the forests and it is a central point for indigenous culture-around the campfires where stories and histories are passed around. Many trees and plants only came into existence after bushfires, often started by Susan’s ancestors.

In the background of this painting appear obscure forms dancing and writhing in the flames (of Hell and Purgatory) as often learnt in the Christian missions and reserves.
