MY SADNESS
BY WENDY MC NEIL (IMAN TRIBE)
In 1857 at Hornets Bank (Not far from Taroom in central
Queensland) my tribe Iman Tribe underwent huge
changes. After experiencing white mans ways of
brutality, rape and murder my people retaliated and the
station owners (Frasers) were killed. After that, a group
named the death squad, or “Browns” were sent out to
extinguish my tribe. It is reported hundreds of my
people were murdered. A small number managed to
flee and ended up in Taroom. This is where my people
now call homeland. My sister still lives there and feels
the ancestral spirits around her.
My painting reflects the time my people run through the
bush to survive and to tell this story.
